Objective: To learn about speed, velocity, their units and conversion of units

Subtopics to be covered:

- Displacement, Speed, velocity

- Problems on speed and velocity

- SI units and conversion to CGS system

Learning Outcome:

- Students know the difference between speed and velocity

- They can solve problems on speed and velocity

1. Divide class into 2 groups. Mark two points in the class. Measure the distance in metres. One of the students in each group will run/walk between the two points. The other student notes the time taken in seconds. Each group will then calculate their speed. The speed of all the groups can be compared by preparing a chart.

2. Divide class into 2 groups. Draw a straight line on the ground with chalk and ask one of the students in each group to one by one stand 1 or 2 metres behind the line and gently roll a ball along the ground in a direction perpendicular to the line. The other student notes the time at the moment the ball crosses the line and also when it comes to rest. This is the time taken by the ball. Measure the displacement between the point at which the ball crosses the line and the point where it comes to rest. Now each group calculates their velocity.
