Objective: To teach the different methods of separation of substances.

Subtopics to be covered:

  1. Methods used to separate mixture of solids. (Hand picking, Winnowing, Sieving, Magnetic separation)
  2. Methods of separation of insoluble solids from liquids. (Sedimentation, Decantation, Filtration)
  3. Methods of separation of solid substances dissolved in liquids. (Evaporation, Condensation)

Learning Outcome:

  1. Students can understand the methods used to separate substances.

[Contributor - Kripa]

1. Pick a pair of students. Ask each student to name a common liquid. Now say that you will combine the two liquids into one vessel. Ask a third student for an idea to separate them.

2. Pick a pair of students. Ask one student to name a common liquid. Ask the other to name a common solid. Now say that you will combine the two into one vessel. Ask a third student for an idea to separate them.

3. Ask the students for some real life examples of the various methods of separation.

4. Ask the students for some real life examples where they have observed sedimentation.
