Activities

Lesson Plan version 1.1 activities

1. Ask the students to count the number of boys and girls in the class. Ask them how they can compare the two numbers.

a) To calculate the difference and say how many more boys (or girls) are in the class.

b) To calculate how many more boys (or girls) are in the class per every girl (or boy).

2. Continue on the previous activity. Count boys (or girls) in terms of dozen and then carry out the same activity. Ask the kids whether having different units of measurement conveys a sensible meaning.

3. Arrange a few small objects (chalk/toffee/etc.) into different groups. Within each group, split the objects into two columns. In the first case, keep the number of objects in each column of each group equal such that the ratio is the same. In the second case, the ratio should be unequal.

4. Divide the class into three groups. Ask two groups to consider themselves as chocolate traders and ask them to come up with a price for their chocolates and the amount of chocolates (for example 100Rs for 3kg of chocolate). Write down the two prices on the board. Ask the third group to select one of the two groups to buy chocolate from.

Discuss this problem in the class. Ask the students whether taking a simple difference of the costs would be helpful or not? Write the prices and kg in a ratio form

price1: price2 and kg1: kg2.

Ask them whether the two prices are in proportion or not.
