1. Collect a set of small objects, both metallic and non metallic. Use a magnet and wave it in the proximity of each of the objects. Sort them according to whether or not they get attracted. What are the constituents of the objects that got attracted.

2. Mark one magnet such that one end is marked with a red cross and the other with a blue cross. Take another magnet and bring one of its ends close to one of the crosses. If it repels mark that end of the second magnet with the same colour as the one it is close to. Otherwise mark the other colour. The poles are now identified.

Lesson Plan version 1.1 activities

1. Take a plastic or a paper cup. Fix it on a stand with the help of a clamp as shown. Place a magnet inside the cup and cover it with a paper so that the magnet is not visible. Attach a thread to a clip made of iron. Fix the other end of the thread at the base of the stand. Bring the clip near the base of the cup.

2. Attach a small magnet to a hockey stick, walking stick or a cricket wicket with a tape or some glue. Go out on a walk through the school playground with this stick’s magnet touching the ground.

3. Rub a magnet in the sand or soil. Pull out the magnet. Now, gently shake the magnet to remove the particles of sand or soil.

4.Place some iron filings on a sheet of paper and pass a bar magnet over them. Pick up the bar magnet by holding it in the centre.

5. Determine the directions in the class or laboratory. Tie a thread to the centre of a bar magnet and hang it from a stand. Note the direction in which the magnet settles and turn it around again. Let it settle and note the direction. Do this many times.

6. Take a rectangular piece of iron and place it on a table. Now take a bar magnet and place one of its poles near one edge of the bar of iron. Without lifting the bar magnet, move it along the length of the iron bar till you reach the other end. Now, lift the magnet and bring the pole (the same pole you started with) to the same point of the iron bar from which you began. Repeat this process about 30-40 times. Bring a pin or some iron filings near the iron bar to check whether it has become a magnet.

7. Take two small toy cars and label them A and B. Place a bar magnet on top of each car along its length and fix them with rubber bands. In car A, keep the south pole of the magnet towards its front. Place the magnet in opposite direction in car B. Now, place the two cars close to one another.
