1. Ask the students to name a few things that are hot, cold.

2. Take three large mugs. Label them as A, B and C. Put cold water in mug A and hot water in mug B. Mix some cold and hot water in mug C. Now dip your left hand in mug A and the right hand in mug B. After keeping the hands in the two mugs for 2–3 minutes, put both the hands simultaneously in mug C. Do both the hands get the same feeling?

1. Three large bowls, ice cold water, hot water, tap water

a) take three large bowls. one with ice cold water, the other with hot water and the third with tap water.

b) dip one hand in ice cold water and the other in hot water for a few minutes.

c) Then take out hands and plunge both into the bowl containing tap water.

d) and that the tap water feels hot to my hand that was in cold water while the same tap water feels cold to my hand that was in hot water.

e) infer that sense of touch cannot tell accurately the amount of heat energy possessed by a body.

2. : A glass bottle, a one hole cork, ink, narrow glass tube of suitable size.

a) put some ink into a glass bottle and ll it with water.

b) close the bottle tightly with a one holed cork and insert the narrow glass tube into the hole.

c) keep the bottle in a pan of boiling water and note that the coloured water in the glass tube rises up.

d) understand that the watergets heated and expands to rise up in the glass tube.

e) realize that the rise in the level is the measure of the temperature.

f) Now cool the bottle. Inote that the water level in the glass tube goes down. Iinfer that liquids expand on heating and contract on cooling.

3. We need: A piece of glass, a mirror, a white sheet of paper.

a) We hold each object so that sunlight falls on it and the reflected light is projected on a wall.

b) We find that the mirror reflects the maximum amount of light and the paper reflects the minimum amount of light.

4. We need: A mirror, a candle

a) Keep a candle in front of the plane mirror. Observe the image of the candle in the mirror. Now Place a screen behind the mirror.

b) Can we get this image on the screen?

5. Let us stand in front of a mirror and observe our image. Is it big or small? Gradually let us move away from the mirror. What happens to the size of the image? Does it change?

6. We need: A mirror, a sheet of thick white paper

a) Take a sheet of thick white paper and write VII.

b) Keep it in front of a mirror. It appears as IIV in the mirror. There is a side to side inversion. Now stand in front of the mirror and touch your nose with your right hand. What do you see in the mirror?
