Activities

Lesson Plan version 1.1 activities

https://www.mathgames.com/skill/4.2-lines-line-segments-and-rays

1. Ask children to make line segments of different lengths using thread and ask them to stick it on an A4 paper or in the note book.

2. Show a straw whose ends have been closed with puffed rice or cotton and ask the students what it reminds them of. Give them some time to think and respond. Guide them to conclude that it is like a line segment which has a precise measurement and cannot be increased further.

Now, show them a straw with one end closed with puffed rice or cotton. Keep joining more straws to the open end. Ask students what the straw reminds them of. Guide them to conclude that it is like a ray which moves in only one direction endlessly and thus cannot be measured.

Now show them a straw with both ends open. Keep joining straws to both ends. Ask students what the straw reminds them of. Give them and guide them to conclude that it is like a line which moves in both directions endlessly and cannot be measured. The class assistant can help children in conducting activities in the class.

3. Depict lines, rays and line segments with hands

4. Give different measurements and ask children to find the lengths of the line segments

5. Ask the children to arrange the straws in two or more lines in such a way that the distance between the lines is same at any point Keeping this way they should see whether these lines can meet at any point and infer that these lines are parallel.

6. Children to write their names in English capital letters and find the angles in the letters

7. Draw stick figures and find angles

8. Use a ribbon and paste it on a paper criss cross and find the angles

9. See the time in the clock and find the angles formed by the two hands and three hands of the clock at different times.

10. Teacher should draw a horizontal line on the board and encourage students to draw a second line that starts at the first and angles upwards and draw several lines - some closer to right angles, and some angled off to the side - to show them their different options. Then instruct them to use a protractor to measure the two angles that are formed on either side of the added line, and to add together the measurements of the two angles. Groups should then share their results with the rest of the class.
