Make teams of 4 students. Each team must draw a circle and divide it in 12 equal parts. Each team must make chits of paper and write these fractions : 1/12, 2,12,3/12,4/12,5/12,6/12.....11/12,1/2,1/3,1/4,1/6. Shuffle these chits. One students picks out one chit and shades those many parts of circle. Then the next student will pick out another chit and shade those many parts. Repeat this step till the circle is fully shaded. The team which shades the circle first wins.

Lesson Plan version 1.1 activities

1. Introduce decimals to children by using the following method. Children to have had some previous knowledge of fractions (in particular tenths).

a) Draw a rectangle on the board and split it into ten equal sections. Ask a child to label each section of the rectangle (i.e. 1/10). Write 1/10 in each section...

b) Colour some of the rectangles, e.g. three sections

c) Ask the children what fraction of the rectangle has been coloured (i.e. 1/10 + 1/10 + 1/10 = 3/10).

d) Explain that 3/10 can be written in another way... i.e. 0.3 (no units and three tenths)
