Objective: To teach the students about melting point, boiling point and distillation

Subtopics to be covered:

  1. Distillation and fractional distillation

Learning Outcome:

  1. Students know that each substance has a specific melting and boiling point
  2. They know the process of distillation and fractional distillation

One way to separate salt and water at home is to boil the salt water in a pot with a lid. Ask any one of the students to bring boiled water (water boiled with salt) to school. Later, once the water is cooled, offset the lid slightly so that the water that condenses on the inside of the lid will run down the side to be collected in a separate container. This is the distilled water. When all of the water has boiled off, the salt will remain in the pot. This happens because salt has a much higher boiling point than water. (Please explain to them that method of evaporation can also be used for separating salt and water just that it works at a slower rate)
