Activities

[Author - Arshea Bimal, Kripa S]

1. Make a list of articles around you that are made of metal

2. List some examples of metal objects that have been made due to the properties :

a) Malleability

b) Ductility

3. Name some metal objects that exhibit:

a) Malleability

b) Ductility

c) Lustre

d) Hardness

e) Sonorous properties

f) Good conductor of heat

g) God conductor of electricity

4. Take a walk around your locality and make a table of the various metals and non metals used in various objects.

Lesson Plan version 1.1 activities

1. Take some common objects like steel spoon, coal, lead of pencil, coin, chalk etc. and drop each of them one by one from a certain height. Listen to sounds and record observations or Listen to your school bell. Find out what material is the bell made up of

2. Take a piece of coal and hit with hammer. What happens? Will your result vary if an iron bar is used instead of coal?

3. Play a game on characteristics of materials (Explain the game in the regional language) on this website-

http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/gamesactivities/materialproperties.html

4. Burning of magnesium in Air- Demonstration video (English)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2i9jLPXprQ&t=63s (only up to 1:30 min). Take magnesium ribbon and bring it close to a candle flame until the ribbon starts burning. Observe. In a test tube, put some magnesium oxide produced and dissolve it in water. Test with blue and red litmus papers.

5. Reaction of sodium with water. Take a small piece of metal and put it in water. Follow the steps in the given video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmcfsEEogxs

6. Reaction of Zinc with dilute hydrochloric acid-Video demonstration

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71fQGSj3yTE

(NOT to be performed by students

7. Take water in a beaker/glass (transparent). Put the following objects in it, one by one-pencil lead, piece of coal, chlorine. Do you observe any reaction or change? Discuss.
