Lesson plan version 1.1 activities

1. Make the students in to groups and ask them to collect different kinds of water available in their locality ,during rainy season ask them to collect rain water as well and test the yield of latter with soap to test the type of water

2. Take 20 ml of hard water in a beaker. Add a spoon of sodium carbonate to it. What do you observe? An insoluble precipitate is formed.

This precipitate is either calcium carbonate or magnesium carbonate depending on the salt present in the hard water sample taken. Remove the precipitate by filtration. The water, so obtained is soft.

To further test this water, pour some soap solution in it and shake well. Does it lather? Yes, it does, showing that the water is soft

1. Take two glasses of water. Add salt in one glass and mix well. Now add one pinch of soap powder in both the glasses of water. You will observe that the soap dissolves faster in the water without salt (soft water), but takes more time to dissolve in salt water (hard water)

2. When you store hard water in a vessel, you will see salt sediments in the vessel after water evaporates. Observe at home and share your points.
