1. Ask students to name some common objects that contain acids, bases and salts.

2. Take a tablespoonful of turmeric powder. Add a little water and make a paste. Make turmeric paper by depositing turmeric paste on blotting paper/filter paper and drying it. Cut thin strips of the yellow paper obtained. Put a drop of soap solution on the strip of turmeric paper. What do you observe?

1. Squeeze out the juice of a lime into a bowl. Dip a blue litmus paper into it. What do you observe? Acids turn blue litmus red.

2. Dip a red litmus paper in a solution of sodium hydroxide solution. What do you observe?

3. Make your own litmus paper at home. Boil some pieces of red cabbage in a vessel of water. Cool and strain out the coloured water. Cut strips of blotting paper and dip them into this coloured solution. Remove and place them on a plastic sheet to dry. Your home made litmus paper is ready.

Lesson Plan version 1.1 activities

1. Take some lemon juice in a cup and add a drop of red litmus to it. Note the colour change. Repeat the same by adding blue litmus and note the colour change. Repeat the experiment for the following substances: Tap water, detergent solution, aeriated drink, soap solution, shampoo, common salt solution, sugar solution, vinegar, baking soda solution, milk of magnesia, washing soda solution, lime water

2. Make a paste of turmeric with water and blot it on filter paper/blotting paper. Cut into thin strips. Put a drop of soap solution on it. What do you observe?

3. Take china rose petals in a beaker, pour hot water over it and keep it until the water changes colour. Use this coloured water as an indicator. Test hydrochloric acid solution with this indicator.

4. Fill one fourth of a test-tube with dilute hydrochloric acid. Note its colour and the colour of phenolphthalein solution. Add 2-3- drops of phenolphthalein solution to the test tube. To this solution, gently add a drop of sodium hydroxide solution and stir. Continue to add sodium hydroxide solution drop by drop, stir and observe any colour change. Stop adding as soon as the mixture turns pink. Touch test tube immediately, you will notice that it is hot. Now add a drop of hydrochloric acid solution. Note colour change.
