Objectives: To teach the students about machines - simple and complex, various machines like lever, inclined plane, screw, pulley, wheel and axle, wedge and their maintenance and care.
Subtopics to be covered:
- Lever - Types of lever and daily life examples.
- Inclined Plane - Real life scenarios
- Screw/Pulley/Wedge - Definition and how does it work
- Wheel and axle -Definition and how does it work
- Maintenance and Care of machines
Learning Outcome:
- Students will get to know about everyday machines, real life usage of various machines, how they work.
- Students can differentiate between various types of machines, how complex machines are created.
- Students will learn to take care of machines and its maintenance.

1. Ask students to make a list of the various machines used in their home and school and write their types. (Eg. Scissors - Lever, Stairs - Inclined Plain, Knife - Wedge)
2. Form small groups of children. Give each group a pebble (or any weight). Ask each group to use their stationery like pencil, eraser, ruler or book and make a simple machine to move (lift it or shift from one place to another) the pebble.
(Eg. holding two rulers together at one end and making a tong out of it to lift the pebble, or place a pencil/eraser on a table, then place a ruler on top of the pencil/eraser to create a lever to lift the pebble, or simply place a ruler in an inclined position to make a plane against a book to roll up the pebble onto the book.)
3. Ask students to identify type of lever for the following
- See –Saw
- Nail clipper
- Stapler
- Broom
- Cricket bat
