1. Ask students to make a list of the various machines used in their home and school and write their types. (Eg. Scissors - Lever, Stairs - Inclined Plain, Knife - Wedge)

2. Form small groups of children. Give each group a pebble (or any weight). Ask each group to use their stationery like pencil, eraser, ruler or book and make a simple machine to move (lift it or shift from one place to another) the pebble.

(Eg. holding two rulers together at one end and making a tong out of it to lift the pebble, or place a pencil/eraser on a table, then place a ruler on top of the pencil/eraser to create a lever to lift the pebble, or simply place a ruler in an inclined position to make a plane against a book to roll up the pebble onto the book.)

3. Ask students to identify type of lever for the following

  1. See –Saw
  2. Nail clipper
  3. Stapler
  4. Broom
  5. Cricket bat

Lesson Plan version 1.1 activities

1. Using a toothbrush: Where are you applying the force to brush your teeth? If you hold the toothbrush at the end of the handle will you get enough force to brush your teeth?

2. Opening a bottle: Notice the cap of the bottle and the mouth of the bottle what do you see? What helps in opening the bottle?

3. Using a scissors: Where are you applying the force? How is this force helping to cut the material?

4. When you use a hammer, if you hold the hammer at the end of the handle will you be able to push a nail down a wooden block? So what do you do to increase the force needed to push the nail down the wooden block?

5. When you need to use a screw-driver to put a screw on or take a screw out, what does the screw have on it – grooves (thread) and the head has a groove to fit the screw driver, then you either put the screw on or out by rotating the screw-driver and the head of the screw

6. Experiment on levers using a book, pen or pencil to determine the effort required to move the book with the pen or pencil and your hands.
