1. Ask students to name plants:

a) Smaller than them

b) Same size as them

c) Taller than them

2. Ask students to get a leaf to class. Illustrate their different parts. Show the different types of venation.

3. We would require seeds of gram and maize, cotton wool, katori and some water. Take two katoris. Place some wet cotton wool in them. Put 3 or 4 seeds of gram in one and maize in the other. Keep the cotton wet by sprinkling water every day, until the sprouts have grown into young plants. After a week try to separate the young plants from the cotton wool. (cotton wool can be replaced with soil) Help the students observe the roots of the gram seeds.

Lesson Plan version 1.1 activities

1. Ask the children to collect some herbs and shrubs which they find near their home and bring them in the next class.

2. Let us take a jar and fill it with water. Place an onion in the neck of the jar and its base in the water. Observe the onion roots

3. Draw a neat and labeled diagram of tap root system and adventitious root system.

4. Children, it is very interesting to help our mother in the kitchen, and next time when you clean greens (Keerai), try to observe the various parts of the plant.

5. Let us cover a leaf of a potted plant with a transparent polythene bag. Observe it after few hours. We will find water droplets in the polythene bag. Why did this happen? Discuss.

6. Ask the class assistant to arrange some hibiscus flowers and blades. Ask children to dissect them (instruct them to be careful while handling the blade) and explain the parts. A video for this activity can be shown for step by step demonstration-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZyMVoOIYJY

7. Go to your kitchen, collect some vegetables. Make a list of the vegetables that are modified roots and stems

8. Ask the students to collect and display the plants/vegetables that have modified stem.

9. Ask the students to collect and display the plants/vegetables that have modified leaf.

10. Ask the students to collect and display some plants they see in their daily life that poses movements.
