Objective: To teach the students how we produce many things which are very useful in our daily life, based on the chemical properties of naturally available raw materials.

Subtopics to be covered:

  1. Cement and its uses
  2. Plastics (Types and uses of plastics)
  3. Glass and its uses
  4. Soap -preparation and uses
  5. Fibres (Types of fibres and their uses)

Learning Outcome:

  1. Students understand the use of Chemistry in daily life.

1. Ask some of the students to gather a handful/spoonful of cement from any site. In the class, ask them to dissolve the cement in any container (cup, beaker). Stir the mixture with the spoon and leave it for one day (The cement will ossify). Show the result the activity to students and ask them to guess various uses of cement based on what they saw.

2. Plastic have various uses and can be classified into types – thermostats (non reshapable) and thermoplastic (reshapable). Ask the students to identify:

  1. Various plastics seen in their environment. Make a list of them
  2. Guess on what would happen if we heat it.
  3. Identify which is thermostat and which is thermoplastic.
