1. Make an inclined plane on a smooth floor, or on a table. You may use a wooden board supported by bricks, or books. Put a mark with a pen at any point on the inclined plane. Now let a pencil cell move down from this point. How far does it move on the table before coming to rest? Note down the distance. Now spread a piece of cloth over the table. Make sure that there are no wrinkles in the cloth. Try the activity again.

Lesson Plan version 1.1 activities

1. Try sliding a wooden block kept on a rough flat table as shown in the figure3.2.(page no 29) Push the block with a small horizontal force, it does not move. Can you say that there is another horizontal force opposing the applied force?.

2. Take an empty box, tie a string around it and pull the box slowly on a smooth surface of a floor. Do you feel any friction? Try pulling the same box on the different surfaces over the floor, such as a thick sheet of cloth, a sheet of coir mat, a sheet of rubber, a sheet of greasy paper and finally on a sand bed. What change do you observe in the magnitude of friction?.

Repeat the same activity using the heavily filled box. Observe the difference. Note down the reason for the differences.

3. Ask children to push a big heavy box on the floor. They might find difficult to push that box. Ask them to find out reason behind this.

4. Ask children to hold a pencil between their palms and ask them to rub. After sometime ask them to repeat the activity without holding the pencil between their palms. Ask them to note down the difference.
